Dr Howard is a respiratory and sleep physician, Deputy Director Department of respiratory and Sleep Medicine and Director of the VRSS, state home ventilation service, at Austin Health. He is a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians, board member for the Institute for Breathing and Sleep, Adjunct Associate Professor at Monash University and Clinical Associate Professor at The University of Melbourne. He was a board member for the Australasian Sleep Association for six years, advises the National Transport Commission and VicRoads regards fatigue, and driving and is a member of the Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine Fatigue Advisory Group. With more than 100 research publications, his research includes laboratory and field projects to develop methods to assess and monitor alertness; interventions to improve sleep health in occupational settings, including the transportation, mining and healthcare sectors; trials to optimise management of acute and domiciliary respiratory failure and ventilation.
