This Sleep Seminar Series webinar discusses what health literacy is, how can it be measured in clinical practice, the implications for health care resource planning and evidence-based interventions for clinicians and researchers to consider. Drawing from the expertise of Dr Mary Boyde, health literacy researcher, who discusses evidence from her work on Heart Failure chronic disease management. Dr Claire Ellender gives the sleep perspective and outlines her collaborations with Dr Boyde, in which the principles of low health literacy intervention have improved CPAP usage for adults with OSA.
Dr Claire Ellender
Dr Claire Ellender BSc MBBS FRACP, is a Respiratory and Sleep specialist at the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane. Her areas of research include evaluating health literacy and sleep education materials, integrating telehealth into sleep care, narcolepsy and complex sleep disorder management. Dr Ellender works closely as a conjoint appointed academic within the School of Medicine, University of Queensland at the PA Southside Clinical unit.
Dr Mary Boyle
Dr Mary Boyde is a Nurse Researcher in Cardiology at Princess Alexandra Hospital and Chair of Metro South Human Research Ethics Committee. She is an Adjunct Associate Professor with the School of Nursing, Midwifery, and Social Work, University of Queensland and a Clinical Fellow, School of Nursing, Queensland University of Technology. Mary has extensive experience in clinical cardiology nursing, undergraduate and post graduate teaching. Her research is focussed on acute and chronic cardiology nursing, improving patient outcomes through non-pharmacological interventions, health literacy and patient education.
