Research on causes of sleep apnea

In conjunction with The Prince of Wales Hospital and Neuroscience Research Australia (NeuRA) this study aims to investigate the different potential causes of sleep apnea.

We will assess how the upper airway muscles work to keep the airway open when you are asleep and whether this is affected by the electrical activity in the muscles around the airway or sensation in the airway. We will also screen a biological sample for genes and biochemical factors associated with upper airway muscle function. Finally, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) techniques will be utilised to investigate the size and shape of your airway muscles and how they move during breathing. This study will provide us with personalised information for each participant about the causes of their sleep apnea. By doing this we aim to improve medical knowledge and create more personalised treatment for Obstructive Sleep Apnea.

What does participation in the study involve?
Involvement may require 1 or 2 overnight visits to the sleep laboratory as well as one separate 2 hour visit to NeuRA in Randwick.

Will I be reimbursed?
You will be reimbursed $150 for an overnight study during which we carry out the study procedures described above. If you have not had a laboratory sleep study before we will also pay you $50 for another night where you sleep in the laboratory with monitors on you, but no other procedures are done.

More information on the project is available here.
